PART 2: MY GRANDSON THREW A FAKE SNAKE AT ME ON THE STAIRS. BY NIGHTFALL, HIS MOTHER LEARNED WHOSE HOUSE SHE WAS LAUGHING IN

Posted on October 2, 2026 By admin

Susan asked whether I was certain. I looked at the red mark around my wrist, remembered Tyler’s phone pointed at me while I struggled on the stairs, and said, “I’m upset, but I’m not confused.” She told me she could be at the house around seven-thirty, and when I ended the call, my hands were no longer shaking.
I started removing family photographs from the upstairs hallway. Tyler at seven with his two front teeth missing. Melissa on her wedding day. Henry standing on our porch, smiling like the house was the greatest thing we had ever owned. Packing those photographs hurt, but leaving them on the walls suddenly felt worse.
Downstairs, Melissa ordered pizza without asking if I wanted any. Later, when I entered the living room, she and Tyler were watching television as though the afternoon had never happened. I walked to the router, unplugged it, and picked it up.
Tyler sat forward. “Grandma, we need Wi-Fi.”
“No,” I said. “You want Wi-Fi.”
Melissa stared at me. “You’re seriously punishing us over the snake?”
“This isn’t punishment.”
“Then what is it?”
“I’m making changes.”
She followed me into the hallway, demanding to know what that meant. When she accused me of constantly reminding them that everything belonged to me, I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing. For two years, I had rearranged my life so they would never feel like guests, and now my daughter was offended by the simple fact that the house was actually mine.
“We live here too,” she said.
“Temporarily,” I answered.
Her face changed instantly. That was the word she herself had used when she moved in twenty-six months earlier, but she clearly hadn’t expected to hear it again.
“So you want us gone?” she asked.
“I want my home back.”
She stared at me. “You’re throwing us out because of a prank?”
“No. I’m finally paying attention because of a prank.”
For the first time, Tyler stopped arguing. I told them exactly what I remembered: my foot slipping, my body falling backward, my hand catching the railing, and both of them laughing after they could see I was frightened. Melissa tried to tell me Tyler never meant for me to fall.
“That’s the problem,” I said. “He wanted me scared. He just didn’t want responsibility for what fear might do.”
Nobody answered.
I carried another framed photograph into the dining room and set it inside the box. Melissa watched me remove Henry’s retirement picture, then another family portrait from beside the staircase. Her anger began turning into confusion.
“What are you doing with those?”
“Packing them.”
“Why?”
I lifted the last large family photograph off the wall.
“Preparing the house.”
Melissa frowned. “Preparing it for what?”
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.
Tyler started toward the door, but I stopped him. “I’ll get it.”
I walked across the same hallway where, only hours earlier, they had watched me struggle down the stairs. My daughter stood behind me, suddenly quiet. For the first time all day, she looked uncertain.
I opened the door.
Susan stood on the porch holding a camera bag, a clipboard, and a folded tripod.
“Mrs. Carter?” she said.
“Yes.”
She smiled professionally.
“I’m here for the listing photos.”
Behind me, I heard Melissa inhale sharply.
