For many residents, this latest project feels like the natural next step.

Those close to Shelton say he has always had a soft spot for animals — especially those abandoned or mistreated.

“He’s never walked past a stray without stopping,” one longtime friend shared. “If he could adopt every dog in Oklahoma, he’d do it.”

The idea for the sanctuary began nearly two years ago, when Shelton visited a rural shelter struggling to stay afloat. According to staff, Blake spent more than an hour sitting on the floor with several dogs, scratching their ears, holding their faces in his hands, and talking to them like they were old friends.

“He said he wanted to do something that lasted,” a shelter worker recalled. “Something bigger than one adoption or one donation.”

The sanctuary will include:

  • 150 permanent housing units for long-term rescues

  • 300 emergency beds for abandoned or abused animals

  • Fully staffed veterinary and rehabilitation areas

  • Outdoor socialization trails and training yards

  • The music-therapy wing, a first of its kind in the region

Shelton’s investment covers the construction costs and the first two years of operations, ensuring the sanctuary can open debt-free while focusing entirely on rescue and recovery.
