THE SMALL GIFT BONNIE RAITT REPORTEDLY SENT CODY GREEN — AND THE SMILE IT BROUGHT TO A BOY WHO HAD FOUGHT LEUKEMIA SINCE HE WAS 22 MONTHS OLD

Posted on August 21, 2026 By admin

Cody Green knew far too much about hospitals before he was old enough to understand why childhood was supposed to feel carefree. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at just 22 months old, the Indiana boy spent much of his short life moving between treatments, remission, relapse and uncertainty. Yet the people who remembered Cody rarely described him only through illness. They remembered his courage, gratitude and ability to find joy in small things. According to a touching story circulating among fans, one of those small things came from Bonnie Raitt’s world of blues and slide guitar.

During years of treatment, Cody reportedly found comfort in Bonnie’s music and became fascinated by the metal slide she used to draw those aching sounds from her guitar. For most listeners, the slide is simply part of Raitt’s signature sound, but to Cody it reportedly became something almost symbolic. For a child who had already endured more medical procedures than most adults ever would, perhaps there was something powerful in that image — something simple being used to create strength and beauty.

According to the circulating account, Bonnie eventually heard about Cody and asked what fascinated him most about her music. The answer was not an album cover, an autograph or a glamorous backstage souvenir. It was the slide itself. Soon afterward, the story says, a small package arrived at the hospital. Inside was a guitar slide Bonnie had reportedly used herself, signed for Cody and accompanied by a short message encouraging him to stay strong and keep music close to his heart.

For a few moments, the hospital room reportedly changed. The machines were still there. The medicine was still there. But in his hands was something connected to a world beyond all of it — concerts, guitars, songs and the musician whose sound had captured his imagination. The gift was tiny, yet the smile it reportedly brought became the kind of memory family members carry long after larger moments fade.

Cody’s extraordinary battle is documented. Born in 2000, he was diagnosed with leukemia in late 2001 and experienced multiple relapses over the following decade. By 2012, his courage had deeply impressed members of the U.S. Marine Corps, who made the 12-year-old an honorary Marine and presented him with navigator wings. One Marine later stood guard outside Cody’s hospital room for eight hours during his final night. Cody died on April 28, 2012, at Riley Hospital for Children after complications related to an infection following years of treatment.

That history makes the reported gift from Bonnie feel even more poignant. Raitt has spent more than five decades making music about love, loss, resilience and the complicated ways people survive what they never expected to face. Her slide guitar has always sounded almost like another human voice — bending, crying and somehow finding beauty inside sadness. For a young fan living through leukemia, holding a piece of that musical world could have meant far more than its size suggested.

Bonnie could not change Cody’s diagnosis. She could not erase the treatments or promise his family more time. But according to the story, she could remind one child that somebody beyond the hospital walls had heard about him, cared about him and wanted him to keep something joyful close.

Cody Green’s life was painfully brief, but it became filled with acts of kindness from people moved by his courage. A Marine stood watch. A community surrounded his family. And, according to this tribute, a legendary guitarist sent him something small enough to fit in his palm.

Sometimes love does not arrive as a miracle. Sometimes it arrives in a little package, carrying a signed guitar slide and enough music to make one brave boy smile.
