TOM JONES WASN’T NAMED TO TIME’S 2026 TIME100 — BUT AT 86, HIS SIX-DECADE INFLUENCE IS STILL IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE

Posted on October 10, 2026 By admin

A viral claim suggesting that Sir Tom Jones had been named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2026 sounded perfectly believable to generations of fans. After all, few singers have carried one unmistakable voice across more than six decades of changing music, fashion and popular culture. But TIME’s official 2026 TIME100 list, published on April 15, does not include Jones, and there is no official record supporting the widely shared quote, “Truth lasts.”

What the story gets right, however, is the larger reason so many people were ready to believe it.

Tom Jones has endured.

At 86, the Welsh singer is still performing before audiences across Europe and North America, decades after “It’s Not Unusual” first turned him into an international star. His official website describes a 2026 touring schedule spanning the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe and the United States, with reviewers repeatedly noting that age has become part of the emotional power of his concerts rather than something he tries to conceal.

That longevity is remarkable because Jones has never survived by pretending music stopped changing around him.

He began as Thomas John Woodward, the son of a working-class Welsh family, before becoming the explosive young performer whose powerful baritone helped define the mid-1960s. His career would eventually stretch from pop and soul to country, blues, gospel and contemporary interpretations, allowing him to remain recognizable without becoming permanently trapped inside the sound of his earliest hits.

His greatest strength may have been knowing what never needed to change.

The voice.

Jones has spoken openly about what keeps him moving forward, explaining that his love of singing remains at the center of everything. Even after thousands of performances, he has said that getting onstage still matters to him in a deeply instinctive way.

That devotion is especially visible in his current concerts.

Rather than opening every night with the obvious crowd-pleasers, Jones has increasingly embraced songs about aging and mortality. Recent 2026 shows have included “I’m Growing Old,” Leonard Cohen’s “Tower of Song” and Bob Dylan’s “Not Dark Yet,” allowing the older Tom Jones to stand openly inside the reality of time instead of recreating the swagger of the 25-year-old who first became famous.

Eventually the familiar songs arrive, and audiences still respond.

“It’s Not Unusual” can instantly collapse six decades into a few minutes. “Green, Green Grass of Home” carries a different emotional weight when sung by a man who has traveled almost everywhere and lived long enough to understand the meaning of returning home. Even his later interpretations now feel inseparable from the experiences behind the voice.

That may be a more meaningful measure of influence than appearing on any annual list.

TIME’s 2026 honorees include figures from entertainment, politics, science, business and culture, chosen for their impact in the present year. Jones was not among them. But influence does not always arrive neatly inside a single calendar year.

Sometimes it accumulates.

It exists in younger singers who grew up hearing the voice, in audiences who first saw Jones on television decades ago and now bring their children to concerts, and in the simple fact that a performer born in 1940 can still walk into a theater in 2026 and command attention without pretending to be anyone other than himself.

That is the real Tom Jones story.

Not an unverified quote.

Not an imaginary ceremony.

And not a title he needs in order to prove his importance.

At 86, Tom Jones is still traveling, still interpreting songs and still finding ways to make an old voice carry new meaning. After more than 60 years, staying relevant without surrendering authenticity may be the most impressive recognition of all.

The lists will change.
