A fan campaign calling for the 86-year-old music legend to be reinstated as a full-time coach on The Voice UK has surged far beyond the 30,000-signature mark, with a Change.org petition now showing more than 73,000 verified supporters. For viewers who have watched Tom guide young singers for years, the message could hardly be clearer: they are not ready to imagine the show without him.
The petition was launched on September 8, shortly after Tom publicly confirmed that leaving the programme had not been his decision. He said he still loved The Voice UK and appreciated its audience, but ITV had decided not to keep him as a full-time coach for the next series. Tom also revealed that he had been offered a substantially reduced role rather than his usual chair, an arrangement he said did not appeal to him.
That admission immediately changed the way many fans viewed his departure.
This was not a veteran performer quietly deciding to retire from television or step away from a demanding schedule. According to Tom, he still wanted to be there. After years of listening to contestants, turning his chair for voices that moved him, sharing stories from his extraordinary career and occasionally surprising viewers by singing himself, the decision had effectively been made for him.

For younger performers, sitting across from someone whose career began before many of their parents were born carried obvious significance. That warmth is precisely what petition supporters say they want back.
The campaign does not guarantee that ITV will reverse course, of course. A petition can demonstrate public feeling, but programming decisions involve budgets, schedules, insurance, contracts and plans for refreshing a long-running format. ITV has thanked Tom for the years and memorable moments he contributed to the programme, while previous statements indicated that discussions about some form of future involvement had not necessarily been ruled out.
That leaves one important door slightly open.
Could Tom actually return?
At this point, there has been no confirmed announcement restoring him to his full-time chair. But the campaign has created something ITV cannot easily ignore: visible evidence that tens of thousands of viewers associate Tom Jones with the identity of The Voice UK itself.
And the timing makes the story even more striking.
Away from television, Tom has made it clear that he is not retreating from public life. At 86, he continues performing for live audiences, reminding fans that his departure from one television programme is not the same thing as stepping away from music.
