TEN NOMINATIONS, ZERO WINS — CHRIS STAPLETON’S BIGGEST CMA MYSTERY IS STILL ALIVE AS HE CHASES THE ONE TROPHY THAT KEEPS ESCAPING HIM

Posted on September 11, 2026 By admin

Chris Stapleton has already achieved the kind of CMA Awards career most artists could only dream about, yet one extraordinary gap remains in a résumé filled with trophies, standing ovations and records. After nearly a decade of nominations for Entertainer of the Year, Stapleton has repeatedly watched country music’s biggest individual prize go to someone else, turning what should have been another obvious chapter in his success story into one of the most fascinating mysteries surrounding the CMA Awards.

Ten nominations.

Still no Entertainer of the Year victory.

Stapleton first entered the category in 2016, only a year after his explosive breakthrough transformed him from one of Nashville’s most respected songwriters into a major star almost overnight. Since then, he has returned to the ballot again and again, building an increasingly powerful case through sold-out concerts, critically acclaimed albums and performances that routinely remind audiences why his voice has become one of the most recognizable sounds in modern country music.

The strange part is that the CMA voters clearly love him.

2023 ACM Awards Winners Highlight: Chris Stapleton Sets Record

Stapleton has accumulated 19 CMA Awards, putting him alongside Brooks & Dunn at the top of the organization’s all-time winners list. His dominance in the Male Vocalist of the Year category has been even more remarkable, with a record eight victories demonstrating just how consistently his peers have recognized the power of that rough, soulful voice.

That makes the Entertainer of the Year drought increasingly difficult to ignore.

This year, Stapleton is once again competing for the trophy, facing Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Ella Langley and Lainey Wilson in a field representing several different versions of what modern country superstardom can look like.

Luke Combs brings enormous commercial power, arena-sized songs and a fan base capable of turning nearly every chorus into a communal singalong. Cody Johnson has built his career around traditional country credibility and an increasingly commanding live presence, while Lainey Wilson has become one of Nashville’s defining stars through relentless touring, hit records and a personality audiences immediately recognize.

Ella Langley represents a newer generation arriving with extraordinary momentum, giving this year’s category another unpredictable element.

Then there is Stapleton.

He does not rely on choreography, elaborate staging or carefully manufactured spectacle. A Chris Stapleton show can become overwhelming with little more than a guitar, a microphone and that enormous voice cutting through the room. His music moves freely between country, blues, Southern soul and rock, yet somehow never sounds as though he is trying to prove how many genres he can touch.

The emotional connection comes first.

That may be why his failure to win Entertainer of the Year feels so surprising to longtime fans.

Songs such as “Tennessee Whiskey,” “Broken Halos,” “Starting Over,” “You Should Probably Leave” and “White Horse” have given him a catalog capable of filling enormous venues, while his concerts repeatedly demonstrate that technical perfection matters far less than emotional truth when a performer knows exactly how to hold an audience.

Perhaps the mystery is partly explained by what the Entertainer category represents.

It is not simply a vocal award, and it is not automatically given to the artist with the most acclaimed album. The trophy is meant to recognize the broad impact of an entertainer across touring, performance, visibility, leadership and overall influence during the eligibility period, which means even an artist dominating other categories can find himself facing a completely different calculation here.

Stapleton knows that better than almost anyone.

Year after year, his name has been called as a nominee.

Year after year, someone else has eventually walked away holding the trophy.

Yet the repeated losses have done little to diminish his standing. If anything, they have made the chase more compelling because Stapleton’s career has continued growing while the unanswered question remains.

At this point, he does not need Entertainer of the Year to prove his greatness.

Nineteen CMA victories already tell that story.

Eight Male Vocalist trophies tell it again.

The songs, sold-out crowds and respect from fellow musicians say even more.

But awards history has a way of creating unfinished chapters, and Chris Stapleton still has one.

After ten nominations and nearly a decade of close calls, country fans are once again waiting for the envelope to open.

Maybe another name will be called.

Or maybe this will finally be the year when the last major CMA trophy missing from Chris Stapleton’s collection finds its way into his hands.
